Kauaʻi is the oldest and most eroded of the main islands, which is precisely why it looks the way it does: deep valleys, sheer green cliffs and a canyon running through its middle.

What Kauaʻi Is Known For
The Nā Pali Coast
About 17 miles of cliffs with no road access. You see it by boat, by helicopter, or on foot via the Kalalau Trail — which is strenuous and permit-controlled.
Waimea Canyon
A mile-wide, roughly 3,000-foot-deep canyon. The scale is genuinely surprising on an island this size.
Serious rainfall
The interior around Mount Waiʻaleʻale is among the wettest places on earth. That rain is what makes the island green, and it shapes what is practical to do on any given day.
Kauaʻi Compared With the Big Island
Kauaʻi is the most scenically dramatic island and the least developed of the four main visitor islands. The Big Island is larger and more geologically active; Kauaʻi is older, greener and more eroded. Kauaʻi also has no road around the full island — the Nā Pali cliffs break the loop.
Who it suits: Hikers, photographers and anyone who prioritises landscape over nightlife.
Who it doesn’t: Travellers wanting lots of dining and entertainment options, or guaranteed dry weather.
Getting to Kauaʻi
Līhuʻe (LIH) has some direct mainland service, though noticeably less than Honolulu or Maui, so many visitors connect through Honolulu. The island is small enough that a single base works well for most trips.
How long to spend: Four to six days.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can you drive around Kauaʻi?
No. The road stops at both ends of the Nā Pali Coast, so the island is a horseshoe rather than a loop.
When is the driest time on Kauaʻi?
Summer is generally drier, though the north shore can receive rain in any month. The south and west sides are reliably drier than the north.
