Molokaʻi has deliberately resisted large-scale tourism. There are no resorts, no traffic lights, and a community that has repeatedly voted against development. Visiting well means arriving on those terms.

What Molokaʻi Is Known For
The world's highest sea cliffs
The north shore cliffs fall thousands of feet directly into the ocean — among the tallest sea cliffs anywhere.
Kalaupapa
The peninsula where people with Hansen's disease were forcibly isolated from 1866. It is a National Historical Park and a place of ongoing significance to descendants, not a scenic stop.
Very little tourism infrastructure
Limited lodging, limited dining, and services that keep local hours. This is the island's defining characteristic, not a shortcoming.
Molokaʻi Compared With the Big Island
Molokaʻi is the anti-resort island. The Big Island is quiet by Maui or Oʻahu standards but still has full visitor infrastructure; Molokaʻi largely does not, by choice.
Who it suits: Experienced, low-impact travellers who genuinely want quiet and will respect a community that is ambivalent about visitors.
Who it doesn’t: Anyone expecting resorts, nightlife, extensive dining or packaged activities.
Getting to Molokaʻi
There is no direct mainland service. You fly a small aircraft into Hoʻolehua (MKK) from Honolulu or Maui — Southern Airways Express is the main operator. These are genuinely small planes, and schedules are limited, so build in slack.
How long to spend: Two to three days.
